A regular 24-year-old from Sydney sharing what I’ve actually learned buying investment properties in Australia.
When I was 23 and my fiancée was 22, we did something most people in our circle thought was pretty ambitious: we bought an investment property. Not our own home — an investment property, in Perth.
It was a duplex — a 3-bedroom on one side and a 2-bedroom on the other. We bought it together, pooled our savings for the deposit, and figured out the rest as we went. We made mistakes. We asked questions. We did a lot of late-night research on property forums.
What surprised me was how little straightforward information there was for people our age trying to do this. Most content was either too basic ("save a deposit!") or too advanced (written for seasoned investors with multiple properties and accountants on speed dial).
I'm now 24, my fiancée is 23, and we've added a second investment property — also in Perth. We still live in Sydney, which is where we work and where the rest of our life is based.
Perth has been good to us. It's more affordable than Sydney or Melbourne, the yields are solid, and the market has moved well. That said, every situation is different — what worked for us won't necessarily work for you.
Partly to document what we've learned. Partly to answer the questions I wish someone had answered for me at 23. And partly because I think more young Australians could get into property if the information was just a bit more accessible.
